Scott Lee

Senior Architect in the Indianapolis Office

At age 24 I found myself married with one kid, working in a factory and living in a trailer. Living for 10 years in a house with wheels on it can do much to focus one’s goals on establishing a solid foundation for life and family. After earning my Architecture degree at Ball State, I liked the idea of working as a design/build architect. I had a sense that the buildings I designed would be better if they were the outcome of a collaborative process between the architect and the builder. Finding out that Aspen (FBi at that time) was a company that was run under Christian principles by Christian men was an added incentive.

The most rewarding part of my job is...

Having challenging clients with challenging projects, being put to the test every day, having a group of highly creative , dedicated people on my team who love doing great work. When you have that kind of a team producing great work, you will inevitably have astounding results and customers who are very pleased. That’s rewarding. And it’s fun.

Buildings that have inspired me to design a better building are...

I don’t have any “hero” buildings, or any “hero” architects but I enjoy designs that are simple, solid, artful, grounded, embracing nature, with a timeless, unpretentiousness that draws you toward and into them. An Architect whose writings have inspired me is Christopher Alexander, the author of A Timeless Way of Building and A Pattern Language.

Persons living or dead I would like to meet...

My great grandchildren.

Outside of work I enjoy...

Being on vacation. I am really good at being on vacation. On vacations and in between vacations, we like doing things with the kids, the dog, and the grandson.

If I could learn one new skill it would be...

Playing the piano, welding, playing the piano with a welder, losing weight, running a marathon, cooking gourmet, laying bricks, and making wise investments. I have a hard time choosing just one.

Last book I enjoyed reading...

The Boat Who Wouldn’t Float by Farley Mowat

Words to live by...

Be.
